BIOPSYCHOSOCIAL-SPIRITUAL MODEL oF HEALTH, FITNESS, Resiliency AND POSiTIVE WELL-BEING
What is positive well-being? What is fitness or being fit? What is being healthy? Are positive well-being, being fit and healthy the same? Being fit and healthy are two sides of the same coin and positive well-being is greater than sum of health and fitness. In the past health was defined as the absence of disease; however good science and a paradigm shift led to a better approach than the old mind-body dualism or bio-medical model which has dominated the health sciences. In 1977 a Dr. George Engel proposed a radical change in his article "The Need for a New Medical Model: A Challenge to Biomedicine." Over the past 40 years the biopsychosocial model progressed to become a holistic health model. The social dimension expanded to include spirituality and religion. For a comprehensive review of the biopsychosocial-spiritual model visit Georgetown University's "National Center for Cultural Competency". For those interested in a deep dive into spirituality, religion and health visit Duke University's "Center for Spirituality, Theology and Health." The below diagram depicts a holistic, ecological, developmental model for positive well-being and health, total fitness and resiliency; positive wellbeing is greater than the sum of fitness and being healthy. In the near future the model will be interactive with descriptions of each domain of fitness: mental, physical, spiritual and social. The model I propose compliments the Chairman of Joints Chief of Staff's "Total Force Fitness" model and program.
